The Anatomy of a Dental Implant

Dental implants are by far the most preferred method for replacing missing teeth, and there are good reasons for it. Dental implants offer the most structural support and provide almost full natural function and appearance. Dr. Zachary Sisler provides patients with full-service dental implant treatments.

Our Shippensburg, PA dentist office uses several different types of dental implants allowing for a personally tailored treatment plan for the replacement of missing teeth. For some patients, teeth in a day, or All-on-Four may be available for a total smile reconstruction in just one visit to our Chambersburg, PA area dentist office.

The Anatomy of a Dental Implant

Dental Implant

Similar to a small threaded screw, the titanium implant is surgically placed in the jaw bone. This piece of the implant acts as a prosthetic root system, stabilizing the bite and promoting natural bone regeneration. The titanium material actually fuses with the bone for a permanent, durable and stable result. The implant takes 2-3 months to fully integrate with the jaw.

The Abutment

The abutment is the anchor that secures the dental restoration. A small abutment is attached to the top of the implant and sits above the gum line. The abutment will be attached once the implant is fully healed and the final restoration is ready to be fit.

Dental Restoration

The dental restoration is the piece of the implant that actually looks and functions like your natural tooth or teeth. Depending on the number of missing teeth a patient has, a dental crown, bridge or denture will be used.

Types of Dental Implants

The type of implant Dr. Sisler recommended will be determined on the patient’s bone and jaw health, as well as the number, placement, and size of their missing teeth. We offer:
